Top Camera: HDR App for the Iphone, IPad and Ipod Touch

There are a few HDR Apps on the App store and I have tried a few of the free ones and nothing I have tried really takes true HDR. Most just seem to oversaturate the image which is not what HDR is about.

Then I tried out the free version of this little App and was pleasantly surprised at the results.

Firstly it takes true HDR images. when you click the shutter you have to keep the camera VERY STILL while it takes a normal, under and then over exposed image. it will then process the image into HDR.

While the demo only takes images in the lowest resolution settings I was impressed enough to buy the full app to be able to take full high resolution photos and I was not disappointed.

Considering this is not an expensive SLR camera and just an Iphone the results are quite remarkable but you have to experiment to get the best results.

When you take any picture on your Iphone regardless of App used it will adjust the exposure depending on what your pointing the centrer of the screen at. If you aim at the bright sky it will adjust the exposure down and can darken out low light level areas. If you aim at the ground it will increase the exposure but then the sky and bright areas get washed out.

When taking pictures with this App I found to aim for a good mid to just slightly under exposed point of light. Make sure the image is not too over exposed.

If you try taking an image that is already over exposed because you're aiming at a bright part of the scene, effectively, the image will end up with one slightly over exposed shot, a really over exposed shot and a not quite dark enough under exposed shot and the results, while often still fine, will loose that certain surreal feel of a HDR image. So make sure your initial shot is nicely balanced.

To the right are a few shots taken on my Iphone 3GS and the Top Camera (paid for) App.
